In April 2008, Carlos Santana sounded like he didn't want anything to do with Guitar Hero. Speaking with the Orlando Sentinel, the famed guitarist said, If you're going to spend that much time and energy, get yourself a real guitar… I'm not into virtual anything, if it's not the real thing, man.

It seems he had a change of heart, however, as the famed guitarist will now appear as a playable character in the upcoming Guitar Hero 5, with a live recording of his acclaimed song No One to Depend On. Activision also announced today that Santana will only be one several new playable musicians in this installment of the $2 billion-grossing rhythm-based series.

Carlos Santana:

His accomplished career and breadth of musical style are a great illustration of the variety of rock experiences we have included in the game, and we are excited to announce him as the first of five playable in-game artists, said vice president of music affairs for Guitar Hero Tim Riley, conveniently overlooking Santana's earlier comments.

For a man who has produced over 40 albums and won 11 Grammy Awards, Santana rarely shows up the Guitar Hero series' set list. Currently, he has one song in the series, a cover of Black Magic Woman in Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock and Guitar Hero: On Tour.

Earlier this month, Activision partially revealed the set list for Guitar Hero 5, which will include such artists as The White Stripes, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Kings of Leon, and Vampire Weekend. It ships September 1 in the US and will be available on the Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 2. He once did so much acid he thought his guitar was a snake. But don't worry, these days Carlos Santana is more interested in singing through his fingers and comparing himself to a horse

Thank you for saying that! You know, I've been programming – which is the right word – my brain to convince the molecules in my body that it's my choice to make every day the best day of my life.

Yes! Your body is like a dog! Or a horse! Or a computer! If you stay on it, morning, afternoon and night, after a while it starts believing that you're capable of not being with misery. It's the opposite of being Catholic. When I was a kid and they trained me to be a Catholic – or they tried to – they said in order to be a good Christian you have to carry a cross and you have to suffer. I was like: No, I don't believe in a God who's masochistic THANK YOU.

What did you do for your 18th birthday, what did you do for your 30th birthday, and what did you do for your 60th birthday?

You're not cleared to have that information! (Laughs) No, I just had fun. Hey, when I was 18 it was right at the peak of revolution, that kind of thing. When I was 30 I was enjoying being invited to open for the Rolling Stones(1), my phone would ring and it was Miles Davis. It's nice to be me.

That is correct. A lot of those songs were created 1997-2007 and they were songs that didn't go on Supernatural or the other albums, because they were instrumentals.

I realised a long time ago that instrumental music speaks a lot more clearly than English, Spanish, Yiddish, Swahili, any other language. Pure melody goes outside time.

Jeff Beck is a singer, but he sings with a guitar, so does Eric, so does Stevie Ray. It's not just through your mouth, it's through your fingers.

Let's talk about you being off your box on LSD when you played Woodstock. Is it true you thought your guitar was a snake?

Well yes, that's not something I would recommend when you're playing in front of 450, 000 people(4). I do not recommend it in that scenario, but I think under supervision it can be very revealing. Everybody sooner or later has to drop the luggage and the baggage of illusions.

When Rolling Stone put you at 15 in their list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time, was your gut reaction I should be higher or I should be lower?

Neither one! I was like: Oh my God! I don't think like that. There's a seven-year-old child in me who's like: I'm included with people I love. But I'll tell you the truth – I never look up to anybody, or look down. I look them straight in the eye. No one's better than me. I'm not better than anyone. Whether it's Eric Clapton or BB King we look straight at each other. And that keeps it real.

Le Retour Du Guitar Hero Carlos Santana

We're working with tequila and we're probably going to have another restaurant that my brother Andre Agassi has invested in. People come to me and align their products with me because they believe that by doing so they'll sell more, and somehow they do, and we use that to help people all over the world. There are people who graduate from high school with high grades but don't have the money to go to university. BAM! There it is for them. You can investigate, it goes clean there. Or to hospitals.

Do you ever go into any of your restaurants in disguise, for example not in a hat, to order a meal as a mystery diner?

4) It is estimated that 500, 000 people attended Woodstock over three days, although it is unlikely that 90% of them were all watching Santana at that moment.

He was ranked 15th best guitar player by Rolling Stone. In real life, he was famous through out the late 1960s to early 1970s for his mix of salsa, jazz, and rock. By the 1980s, his music continue to stay popular untill the 1990s, where he experienced a major decrease in his record sellings. By the late 1990s, he had returned to commercial success, much thanks to his duet with Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas in the smash hit Smooth, featured in his 1999 album Supernatural.

Santana was born in Autlán de Navarro, Jalisco, Mexico. His father was a mariachi violinist, and Carlos learned to play the violin at age five and the guitar at age eight. Young Carlos was heavily influenced by Ritchie Valens at a time when there were very few Latinos in American rock and pop music. The family moved from Autlán de Navarro to Tijuana, the border city between Mexico and California, and then San Francisco. Carlos stayed in Tijuana but joined his family in San Francisco later and graduated from Mission High School there in 1965.

In San Francisco, the young guitarist got the chance to see his idols, most notably B.B. King, perform live. He was also introduced to a variety of new musical influences, including jazz, world music, and folk music, and witnessed the anal bead growing hippie movement centered in San Francisco in the 1960s. After several years spent working as a dishwasher in a diner and busking for spare change on the streets, Santana decided to become a full-time musician; in 1966, he formed the Santana Blues Band, with fellow street musicians David Brown and Gregg Rolie (bassist and keyboard player, respectively).

With their highly original blend of Latin-infused rock, jazz, blues, salsa, and African rhythms, the band (which quickly became known simply as Santana) gained an immediate following on the San Francisco club scene. The band's early success, capped off by a memorable performance at Woodstock in 1969, led to a recording contract with Columbia Records, then run by Clive Davis.

In 1972, Santana became a huge fan of the pioneering fusion band The Mahavishnu Orchestra and its guitarist John McLaughlin. Aware of Santana's interest in meditation, McLaughlin introduced Santana and Deborah to his guru, Sri Chinmoy. Chinmoy accepted them as disciples in 1973. Santana was given the name Devadip - meaning The lamp, light and eye of God. Santana and McLaughlin recorded an album together, Love Devotion Surrender, with members of Santana and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, along with percussionist Don Alias and organist Larry Young, who both had made appearances on Miles Davis' classic album Bitches Brew in 1969.
