It’s by no means unusual for us to be self-conscious or a little shy when beginning to learn a musical instrument. When the Coronavirus pandemic first hit the UK in March of 2020 I was very reluctant to move my lessons online as I was sceptical of their effectiveness and concerned about the quality of music lesson that could be offered online. I was however happy to make good of an undesirable situation, if nothing more give my younger learners something to look forward to in what were very bleak times for all. My scientism was soon turned to enthusiasm to do as much online teaching as possible as I noticed the progress of my students literally take flight like never before. The lesson engagement and motivation of my students escalated so much so that I soon realised that the lessons I was giving were amongst the best, if not the best, that I had given in 20 years of teaching. The response from my students, not just in their progress but in their motivation and enjoyment was so powerful that I soon realised that online guitar lessons were a lot more than a temporary solution while we waited for normality to return, but a giant leap in how one-to-one learning of an instrument should be done.
I couldn’t bear the thought of any of my learners being disheartened by not fully understanding or having concerns over what they are practicing between lessons.
