Temple Bar Guinness World Record Guitar

Temple Bar Guinness World Record Guitar

Dave Browne has begun his world record attempt in Dublin this afternoon and says the hardest challenge will be to stay awake for the next four days as he strums his heart out.

At 4pm this afternoon, Dave Browne picked up his guitar and pleck and began his world record attempt at playing the guitar for 101 consecutive hours at The Temple Bar pub in Dublin.

Irishman

The current world record is held by Guillermo Terraza from Argentina for 100 hours of guitar playing which he completed in May of last year.

Browne, who has played with the likes of The Commitments, The Dubliners, Aslan and the Pogues, will be joined by friends and fellow musicians as he begins his world-record attempt.

It’s been something that I have been planning to do for years now and I feel as though I am finally ready for it. Playing guitar comes really naturally to me but I have to say, staying awake is going to be the biggest challenge. The longest guitar session I have played to date is three days so this is going to require a serious amount of mental endurance to get through over 100 hours with hardly any sleep. But I’ve been training for the last nine weeks and feel very fit and ready for what’s ahead.

The rules stipulate that reasonable songs must be played to a reasonable standard and that apart from pauses between songs lasting no more than 30 seconds, play must be continuous.

Five minute breaks are allowed after an hour of playing but if Browne wants 30 minutes of sleep he has to play for six hours straight.

Browne has been a regular on the Temple Bar music scene for a number of years and has the full support of all at The Temple Bar pub with manager Martin Deegan saying: “It promises to be a thrilling and fun 101 hours.”We told you about this a week or two ago at our admiration for the attempt in itself, hell he could have said he was going to just stay awake for 100 hours and I would have been damn impressed.

However Dave Browne today all kinds of destroyed the Guinness World Record for the longest guitar playing session in the world. At 10:20am this morning (Friday June 17th) Dave Browne was officially crowned a World Record breaker after starting at 4pm on Sunday June 12th in The Temple Bar pub, Dublin. Given the strict rules and regulations set down by the Guinness World Records, he had a 30 second break between songs (which had to be recognisable, published music lasting at least two minutes) building to a 40 minute break every eight hours which enabled him to power nap, eat a protein meal, shower and change.

A special moment on Wednesday afternoon came when Dave got to play a rare Stevie Ray Vaughan Fender Stratocaster electric guitar. The signed, limited edition model was loaned to him by its owner Pat Henry for a few hours (the first time played in 20 years!) as a gesture of good luck.

Dubliner

He played guitar continuously for 114 hours and 20 minutes which consisted of 1372 different pieces of music, roughly 12 per hour which is not only a testament to his endurance as well as his memory of music. Not only that but at the 90 hour mark as Dave thought he was closing in on the World Record, he was informed that the world record stood at 113 hours and not the previously thought 100. Yet Dave persevered and won through, he said

“I am absolutely ecstatic! It feels surreal. I have to say I am incredibly lucky to have had such great support from friends, family and fellow musicians and visitors to the pub as they really kept me going.
