Rumba is a type of flamenco. This style is derived from the influence of the Afro-Cuban rumba which was brought from Cuba to Spain in the 19th century. One of the differences is that the main instruments are guitars instead of congas. It is also written as “rhumba” and many people confuse the two spellings. It is played in 4/4 time, unlike most other flamenco forms, which are in sequences of twelve beats. This is probably one of the reasons the rumba is so popular, as audiences can easily relate to the familiar 4/4 rhythm.
The sequence is as follows: hit, up (with all fingers), down (with all fingers), and up (p). Once the sequence becomes familiar it is recommended that only the index or middle finger be used instead of all fingers. This will result in faster and easier play because less effort is required to make the movements. Rotating the wrist is very important while performing the downstroke (i) and upstroke (p) movements. Without the proper rotation, it is not possible to “roll” the wrist quickly with solid hand movements that are required for this technique. The rhythm is in 4/4 time, and below is the pattern to follow:
Flamenco Guitar: The Sound Of Spain
If the hit is closer to the sound hole it produces a deeper sound. If the hit is closer to the bridge it produces a harsher or higher sound. Varying or alternating the hits at these two locations produces a richer and more diverse accompaniment. Expanding on this technique, the guitar itself can be made to sound like a percussion instrument. Every part of the neck and the soundboard sounds a little bit different when struck, so striking at different places can result in a very rich and rhythmical sound.
• It is very important to be relaxed with the wrist and to warm it up before playing. Otherwise, it is difficult to go fast.
• Always practice very slowly at first, until you are confident with the movements, and then you can speed it up. Never speed up before you perfect the exact sequence of the movements.

If you're visiting Seville, I can loan you a guitar for useduringprivate guitar lessons (no charge!). If you plan on taking several flamenco guitar lessons, you will learn muchfaster with regular practice between classes. If you don't want the hassle or risk of traveling with your own guitar, I can rent you a guitar during your stay. The cost of rent is 30€ per week, plus cash deposit (50€ or 200€ depending on which guitar). I return the deposit when you return the guitar.Please check in advance on availability!
I'll be in Seville for several months. Can I rent your guitar long-term? Yes, you can, if it's available, but it probably wouldn't make financial sense. You would be better off buying a cheap student guitar (around 150€) to use during your stay. If you don't want to take it with you, you cangive it away (or, if you're lucky, sell it), when you leave. I want to buy a nice guitar while in Seville, where should I go? It mostly depends on your budget. You can get a decent factory-made guitar starting around 300 or 400€, which would be fine if you're a serious student on a tight budget. Hand-made, professional quality guitars start around 800€. Be sure to get a sturdy case to protect your guitar while traveling!

It is perfectly fine if you are new to classical guitar. I teach students of all levels on a regular basis, and you'll be sure to progress and learn some fun and beautiful music. That said, if you'll be taking only a one-offprivate lesson, it will help a whole lot if you already know how to play a bit ofguitar (any style). If you know a few basic chords, you'll be in good shape.
From a professional point of view, reading music notation is a must if you're a serious classical guitarist. TAB may bequick and easy to learn, but it leaves gaps in yourunderstanding of music.
That said, if you have been learning from TAB and have no interest in learning to read notation, I'll respect that and work with you. Just understand that depending on your playing level, your choice of repertoire may be limited. There is plentyof repertoire in TAB for beginning and intermediate players, but the options dwindle as you advance.
Of The Greatest And Most Famous Spanish Guitar Players
If you're starting from zero and can devote the time to learning classical guitar properly, I strongly recommend learning music notation. If you're taking intensive classes over several weeks, I will teach you! If you're taking just one or a few classes, I will probably opt to teach you by rote or using TAB, so that we can get you playing piecesas quickly as possible.
This depends entirely on your goals and desires for your guitar studies in Seville, how much practice time you want between classes, and how much sightseeing and traveling you want to fit in.
