What makes an electric guitar sound so amazing? Many things, the wood, the neck, the player ... but mostly it's the pickups. There are many types of pickups, but we're going to focus on two of the most popular: the single-coil and the humbucker.

A pickup is a magnet that picks up the guitar string’s vibrations. The vibrations are turned into an electric signal that is sent to an amplifier to make the sound of the guitar louder.

Single-coil pickups have been around for longer. They are characterized by having a sound that is clearer and with more high frequencies. They are a noisier design and can have an unwanted hum while you are not playing. Although they sound great with distortion, when played without distortion they sound bright and clean.

A humbucker is made up of two single coils that are wired in opposition of one another. They were made in an effort to combat the unwanted hum of a single coil pickup, hence the name humbucker. A humbucker, humbucking pickup, or double coil, is a guitar pickup that uses two wire coils to cancel out noisy interferce from coil pickups. Humbucking coils are also used in dynamic microphones to cancel electromagnetic hum. Humbuckers are one of two main types of guitar pickups. The other is single coil.

In any magnetic pickup, a vibrating guitar string, magnetized by a fixed magnet within the pickup, induces an alternating voltage across its coil. However, wire coils also make excellt antnas and are therefore ssitive to electromagnetic interferce caused by alternating magnetic fields from mains wiring (mains hum) and electrical appliances like transformers, motors, and computer scres, especially older CRT monitors. Guitar pickups reproduce this noise, which can be quite audible, sounding like a constant hum or buzz. This is most noticeable wh using distortion, fuzz, compressors, or other effects which, by adding gain to low-level signals, reduce the signal-to-noise ratio and therefore amplify the unwanted interferce relative to the signal from the strings.

Humbuckers work by pairing a coil that has the north poles of its magnets orited up (toward the strings) with another coil alongside it with the south pole of its magnets orited up. By connecting the coils together out of phase, the interferce is significantly reduced via phase cancellation: the string signals from both coils add up instead of canceling because the magnets are placed in opposite polarity.

This dramatically improves the signal-to-noise ratio. The technique has something in common with what electrical gineers call common-mode rejection, and is also found in the balanced lines used in audio equipmt. By convtion, both humbucker coils are wound counterclockwise. The coils can be connected in series or in parallel in order to achieve this hum-cancellation effect, but humbucker pickups td to be connected in series because that doubles the signal of the strings while keeping the hum reduced.

Many solid-body guitars feature cavities only for single-coil pickups. Installing full-sized humbuckers in this type of guitar requires additional routing of the woodwork, and/or cutting of the pickguard if the instrumt has one. If the process is not carefully done, the instrumt's body and pickguard may be damaged. In many situations, to maintain a guitar's aesthetics and/or functionality, the process would not be carried out, to avoid the associated risk. As a result, many pickup manufacturers now produce humbucking pickups compacted into the size of a single coil. As a concept similar to mini-humbuckers, a stacked pickup offers the more subtle and delicate sound of a single-coil, while still retaining the hum-cancellation properties of a humbucker. This is oft used on bass guitars, where the type of pickup used has a greater effect on the instrumt's overall sound, and the lower range of notes and their fundamtal frequcies can match frequcies typically more heavily affected by hum. This is oft called a stacked pickup, because the coils are most oft stacked vertically, with the coil containing magnets placed closer to the strings.

Another design known as the rail humbucker features a single magnetic compont spanning across the tire string width of the instrumt. These pickups look like a normal mini-humbucker, except without the typical dots corresponding to the magnetic pole-pieces. This is sometimes expanded into a normal-size quadrail, or double humbucker, effectively combining 4 coils connected in series to produce an extremely high-output pickup.
