Fingerstyle Guitar String Height

Students often think that they need to become “stronger” and push “harder” when in fact – the guitar should become “easier” to play.

A few years ago, I personally played Tommy Emmanuel’s famous Maton that he named “Mouse” – and it played like a dream! So nice, easy, and comfy on the hands. No straining is needed.

You can go to most guitar shops or repair people and get what is called a “guitar setup.” Most students & aspiring young players don’t even know they can get their guitars setup.

Adjusting Guitar Truss Rod And Intonation

It all depends on how sensitive your guitar is to humidity/weather. I’d say every 6 months, have a tech look at your guitar and make tweaks.

The “action” of your guitar refers to how low the strings lay against the fretboard. The lower they are (less distance between frets & strings) the easier it is to play.

This is done by a combination of small, small, small measurements that guitar techs understand – involving the truss rod (rod in the neck of the guitar), the nut, and the bridge.

Many people think that the action is set solely by the “truss rod” adjustment. It’s not! You need to have a “harmony” of all the adjustments made – which is why you should go to a pro!

You want your action nice & low, but then the guitar tech says “it will buzz.” Guitar techs pride themselves on not having strings “buzz.”

The “strummer” makes the strings vibrate with a bigger string trajectory, so it’s more likely that given the same setup, a strummer will buzz and a fingerstyle guitar player will sound fine.

“I play fingerstyle guitar. I don’t care if it buzzes a little, I need it to be easy to play for my left hand.”

Here are the measurements a tech (Randy Hughes – he is awesome…) once did for me, and I loved the feel of the guitar.

The measurement is from the top of the 13Th fret to the bottom of the string. If I can help with anything else let me know.

I cannot say that these will be right for YOUR guitar. Each instrument is different, and each player is different. For a Maton 808 guitar, it feels great though – so if you own a Maton, you can try this as a starting point.

When it comes to set up, the only thing you can usually do is to adjust the truss rod, without major modifications to the saddle and nut. Let's talk about that and go through it.

This is always the first step, no matter what. Get your guitar in tune, and stretch those strings out as much as possible. If you've never done that, check out our blog post here: How to stretch your strings

Firstly, you need to measure your action height. Action height is the measurement in mm between the top of the 12th fret and the bottom of the string.A good measurement for an acoustic guitar is between 2.5-2.75 mm. looking below, you can see two different measurement types. First, we are using a standard ruler. You should use a metal ruler, that starts at 0 with no gap so that you can get an accurate measurement.

You can see that this string height is slightly more than 2.5mm. Alternatively, you can also pick up an action height measurement tool, which tells you exactly the height required. You can see in this image, that the line just slightly shows below the 2.5mm. this gives a measurement of slightly more than 2.5mm

To adjust your truss rod, you firstly need to look down the neck. If you look from the nut down, you can see which way the neck bends. If it is bending towards the blue line, the guitar neck has too muchrelief. if the neck is bent towards the red, it has too much tension.Once you have an idea of which way the neck is having an issue, there is another step to check it.

Next, you need to place one finger on the 1st fret, and one finger on the last fret. You can use a capo for the 1st fret if you want. If you now look at the 8th fret, you can tell which way the neck is bending. If there is a large gap at the 8th fret, with the string held down, that means the neck definitely has too muchrelief. If the string is touching the fret, or even being bent by the fret, the neck has too muchtension. On a truss rod, when adjusting the neck, you turn the Allen key anti-clockwise to addreliefand clockwise to add tension.

Please note, you should never turn the truss rod more than 1/4 of a turn at a time.Making big adjustmentscan break your guitar.

When you have added the required change, retune the guitar, and recheck the neck. If the neck is straight, check the action height.

If your action height is still too far out of adjustment (not between 2.5-2.75mm), the bridge/nut needs to be adjusted. Bridge adjustment is when overall action height is too high, whereas Nut adjustment is only when the strings are too high at the Nut only.Bridge and Nut adjustment can only be done manually, and this is probably something better left to a luthier. If your neck is adjusted and your guitar is tuned, that is usually as far as you need to go.For an acoustic guitar to work properly, it is very important that the gap between the strings and the frets (called the ‘action’) is set correctly. If the strings are too close, they will rattle against the metal frets when they’re played and the guitar will sound horrible. If the strings are too far from the frets, the player will have to push down much harder on the strings, which will make the guitar uncomfortable to play and can often bend the notes out of tune.

To get the right gap between the strings and the frets all the way along the guitar’s neck, several fine adjustments have to be made – these adjustments are known as the ‘setup’. To set up an acoustic guitar properly requires specialist tools, accurate measurements, and expert knowledge – so it needs to be done by an experienced guitar technician.

In theory, all acoustic guitars should be set up perfectly when they leave the factory – however – in our experience, very few of the guitars delivered to our shop arrive in this condition.

So, even if an acoustic guitar was set up perfectly at the factory where it was made (and not all of them are), there’s no guarantee that it will arrive at a shop in the UK in this condition. In our experience, almost all the acoustic guitars that are delivered to our warehouse need some work doing to them before they can be hired.

The Ultimate Guide To Acoustic Guitar Strings

For anyone who’s curious to know how an acoustic guitar is set up, here’s a step by step guide to how we do it.

Before starting any work, we need our repairer’s expert eye to check over the guitar carefully to make sure there are no major problems and issues, such as cracks in the wood, or anything that will prevent the guitar from being set up properly.

Over the years we have seen various problems, or issues, that if not picked up on at beginning can lead to expensive repair bills further down the line.

Hey

Action! Take Action To Adjust String Height

At this stage, any instrument that doesn’t meet our high standards is sent back to our supplier, who will exchange it for a new one.

Most acoustic guitars are factory-fitted with light gauge (12-53 or 12-54) strings, although some of the high-end manufacturers, notably Taylor and Collings, now fit medium gauge (13-56) strings as standard. Using a set of micrometers, our repairer measures the string gauge, and makes a note of it on our set-up tag.

It’s also very important at this stage that the guitar is tuned up to concert pitch, as the pitch affects the tension of the strings, which in turn affects the geometry of the guitar, particularly the curvature of the neck.

How Is Your Action Being Set? (low Vs High Action Discuss)

If you are planning on having your guitar set up then deciding on your preferred gauge and even your most used tuning can have a bearing on how the guitar is set up. Equally different strings work for different things, we are always happy to advise on this.

Once the strings are tuned correctly, the repairer can set the curvature of the neck by adjusting the tension of the truss rod –
