Seagull Guitar Bridge Lifting

Seagull Guitar Bridge Lifting

I'm a casual guitar player with very little knowledge of guitar repair. I bought a Seagull S6 a number of years ago when I was a teenager and I never really took great care of it. Once, I lent it to someone who left it in their trunk on a super hot day and when I got it back I noticed that the body of of the guitar was warped - there's a bulge (see pics) just below the bridge, a bit to the left of center. I didn't know what to do so I just left it. Over time the bridge has lifted up starting in the bottom right corner, but seeing as I sometimes didn't play for months at a time, I didn't bother looking into it or doing anything about it.

So now I'm starting to play more and I'd like to get it into decent playing shape. As you can see from the pics, the bridge has lifted a lot. I'm not an expert and I don't need it like mint, and I frankly don't have much of any money to put into it (maybe $100). I'm trying to figure out if there's anything I can do or have done to bring the bridge back so that I can still get it to tune properly (right now I can't get it to be in perfect tune). I looked into the JLD bridge doctor a bit but I don't know if it's designed for a situation as severe as mine.

I know I'm an idiot for not taking care of my nice guitar, so you don't need to remind me of that (but if you must, be my guest). Do you have any advice? Thanks for helping out a complete novice.

Being that the bridge is largely removed, it will be an easy repair for a professional repair person to remove the bridge and re-glue it.

Given the geometry of the top, I'd hazard a guess that at least one brace has become loose and needs to be re-guled. Again, a relatively easy repair for a professional repair person.

I'd suggest taking it to a professional repair person. Chances are that it may not cost much beyond $100 to fix. If you attempt to repair it yourself - and fail - I can guarantee it will cost much more to repair your repair work.

That and the fact that I allowed my Seagull to dry out after I moved from California to Arizona. Its top looked a lot like yours.

It's not that you have a bulge, so much as you have depressions. Lack of humidity causes the top to sink, pulling away from the bridge.

I suggest you try rehumidifying your guitar just a bit (as others have suggested, loosen the strings as a safety measure), keeping a close eye on the gaps between the top and the bridge. If they start to get smaller, that is useful information.

In the case of my Seagull all it took was some aggressive humidification (by Freddie Cisneros at Mercy Guitar Hospital -- I love typing that!

Bridge

Definitely a bulge. Seagulls have a flat top in the area of the bridge rather than having a radius typical of most acoustics. The only place they have a radius is under the fretboard extension in order to accommodate the neck angle. If there were depressions, the level would be resting on the binding and not touching in the middle.

Bridge Very Broken On Seagull S6 Cedar, Is This Fixable At All?

Okay thanks everyone. I will look up a guitar repair shop in my area. Can anyone recommend anything in the Montreal area?

As has been pointed out, this is a fairly simple repair as long as string tension doesn't pull the bridge off. If the bridge flys off under string tension, it WILL take pieces of the top (under the bridge), among other things (all are bad)

How

Sorry Phil. I used to live in Montreal, but that was a long time ago, and I don't know any shop or repairman there who I can presently recommend.
