Shure Sm57 For Guitar

Shure Sm57 For Guitar

The SM57 is quite possibly the most popular and widely used microphone to record electric guitars. But there are other microphones that you should consider when choosing a guitar mic. Here are three of them.

The SM57 is quite possibly the most popular and widely used microphone to record electric guitars. The frequency response and presence peak help to cut through a mix, while the high SPL handling makes it ideal for loud sound sources such as guitar amps. Great for most applications, granted, but good quality sound is extremely subjective, and there are plenty of occasions that call for something different.

When choosing and mic, you should consider the bigger picture and the desired end result. This might involve trying a number of microphones before you find the one that works best for your application. Here are 3 alternatives to consider:

For the development of the SM7, engineers were given the SM57 cartridge elements (Unidyne III) and asked, without restrictions on size or cost to essentially make it better. Very subjective perhaps, but thanks to its large diaphragmdesign and bigger housing, the SM7 has a wider frequency response; particularly in the lower frequency ranges. The optional presence peak or low cut filtering also allow greater control over frequency response, allowing you to tweak the mic to suit different guitar or amplifier combinations. If you like the SM57, but would welcomegreater creative controlover low and high frequency response, the SM7B could be the mic for you. (Click here for more information on what makes the SM7B different to the SM57)

The Beta27 is a truly versatile and unique microphone. It is the only side-address supercardioid condenser microphone available on the market, and can be used for a wide variety of applications. Including, but not limited to electric &acoustic guitar. The Beta27 has superior transient response thanks to its ultra-thin diaphragm. If you're looking for a brighter, more detailed sound the Beta27 delivers, without being overbearing.

Additional advantages include greater control thanks to a 3-position switchable low-frequency filter, which helps reduce unwanted background noise or counteract the proximity effect. The -15 db switch-able attenuator also helps to handle extremely high SPLs - essential when recording electric guitar amps.

Essential Mics For Live Bands

Ribbon mic's belong to the dynamic family. However, they have an electrically conductive diaphragm, which moves directly in the magnetic field. By losing the voice coil, you reduce mass and allow the diaphragm to move faster. This produces a microphone with wider frequency response in comparison to regular dynamic microphones. Ribbon microphones have a smoother high end compared with condenser microphones, and are often described as having a warm and full sound. If you're looking for a fuller and brighter sound than a dynamic, but also prefer a warmer sound than condenser mics, ribbon mics could be the best option.

Where Ribbon mics traditionally fall down, is high SPL handling and durability. A loud sound source alone could be enough to damage the mic. This is not the case with Roswellite™ Ribbon Technology, which replaces traditional foil ribbons with a high tensile strength, toughness, and shape memory. This ultimately results in superior resilience at extremeSPLs.

The KSM313 has an additional advantage through dual-voice tuning. One side of the mic is warm and full for amplifiers, the other isdesigned for bright and flattering vocal response. If you're a singer and guitar player, or just want a microphone than can handle both applications - the KSM313 delivers.

Acoustic Guitar Recording Techniques Of The Pros

If you’re in the market for an instrumental microphone, the Shure SM57 is a great jumping-off point. For $100, you’re getting a die-cast steel mic with an integrated pneumatic shock mount for countering vibration-induced movement. It’s built to last a lifetime and is able to accompany you on a career’s worth of tours.

Shure often sets the industry standard when it comes to professional recording equipment. From the famed Elvis mic to the beloved SE215 in-ear monitors, the company understands that audio quality and durability are top priorities. The Shure SM57 is no different. This tapered capsular microphone is favored by musicians of all genres for capturing instruments both on stage and in the studio. It’s not a question of “if you should get the SM57, ” but rather a question of “when.” We spent a couple of weeks testing out the Shure SM57 and can tell you everything you need to know about it.

Musicians should get the Shure SM57, whether they are planning to use it to record instruments or amplify live instruments. If you’re just starting out in the music world and don’t know what to get, this is a great introductory option. It’s dynamic and doesn’t require external power to operate. It can handle extreme sound pressure levels, which means distortion should rarely be an issue. The cardioid polar pattern minimizes background noise recording and relays just the intended sounds.

The microphone is meant to record instruments, but works just fine with vocals. However, if you’re looking specifically for a vocal mic, the Shure SM58 is very similar to the SM57, but is meant for the voice.

The shape of the Shure SM57 allows it to be handheld as a vocal mic in a pinch, but Shure provides a swivel stand adapter, which can be angled to your liking. That way, the mic capsule is always directly receiving sound waves from the intended source. Shure also provides a zippered carrying pouch. It’s fine, but unnecessary, seeing how the SM57 is lauded for its toughness.

And, boy, is this microphone tough. The die-cast steel looks and feels great. I’m not concerned about tossing it together with other recording equipment. It’s also built to handle loud sounds without issue: it’s a dynamic microphone that has a sensitivity of 1.6 mV per Pascal (94dB SPL). On the bottom of the microphone, you’ll see an XLR output. This mic is as no-frills as it gets and does its job exceptionally well.

There are a few microphone types, the most popular being dynamic and condenser variants. Unlike condenser mics, the Shure SM57 doesn’t require external power, and it can be subjected to high sound pressure levels without introducing distortion. By nature of a cardioid polar pattern, the mic registers sound directly in front of it with some off-axis pickup. The biggest perk of this is that imprecise placement is okay and won’t ruin your recording.

The Shure SM57 is deliberately tuned to keep vocals and instruments clear and present. Sub-bass frequencies are attenuated. This is good for live music as you don’t want a kick drum or the fundamental note of a bass guitar to overpower mid-range sounds. After all, those sounds are just as important as the initial

. It also means you may not need to apply a high-pass filter during post-production. The upper midrange and treble frequency emphasis ensures the clear transmission of important details, which applies particularly to string instruments and vocals.
