Percussive Acoustic Guitar Artists

If you don’t know what percussive guitar playing is or how it works, then you NEED to watch these amazing videos! We’ve compiled a list of our top 5 favourite percussive guitar players, particularly of the acoustic variety. All 5 of these are definitely worth checking out, so make sure you watch all of them and let us know in the comments which guitarist is your favourite.

Antoine Dufour is one of the many artists signed to Candy rat records and is a French Canadian acoustic master. I find him to be extremely creative and innovative on the guitar and his choice of techniques is endless, not too mention the precision with which he pulls it off is awe-inspiring. He studied at CEGEP in Joliette and has gone on to win numerous acoustic championships across the world. I’ll leave you here with one of my favourites:

Mike Dawes in an English acoustic genius with his first claim to fame was his composition of Gotye’s-somebody that I used to know. Mike’s compositions are packed with crazy techniques that are elegantly executed. His compositions are known for including multiple instruments in one composition and usually including bass lines and vocal melodies. Have a look at this;

Tobias hails from Duisburg, Germany. What I enjoy about this particular guitarist,  is his moderately playable compositions. This is a guy to look into if you are serious about learning the basics and up to a more advanced level of acoustic percussive guitar. Enjoy.

Andy McKee is the American OG. This guy is the sh!t! He released a song called drifting in 2006, which really open my eyes to the percussive world of acoustic guitar. Check it out here

John Gomm is an English singer songwriter/performer and his compositions are truly unique and a must see. Just when you thought it was crazy enough that these guys play the various instruments on their guitar, you find this guy, who sings on top of all that. John’s guitar playing is truly epic and he uses techniques and tricks that I have never seen before. Ladies and gentleman; John Gomm.

He’s racked up major views on Youtube, toured internationally, and collabrorated with Grammy winners – the guy’s got serious skills. And he’s funny. His ‘live’ shows are known for his commentary and audience interaction, in addition to the amazing playing.

Dawes’ video ‘master course’ breaks down various elements of his style. 40 seperate lessons cover topics like Travis Picking, DADGAD, and most importantly here: percussive techniques.

Maneli Jamal, a resident of Canada (though he grew up in several other countries), is an amazing acoustic guitarist, composer, and performer. He has won numerous awards and competitions, tours internationally, and has even been featured on the cover of the “Toronto” magazine in his hometown.

Tobias Rauscher is a melodic percussive fingerstyle guitarist who combines different influences in his songs. His musical characteristic is a strong focus on melody, enhanced by various techniques and custom tunings.

Rauscher’s course is built to walk you through the components of percussive guitar technique, all the way to playing full songs. The curriculum is comprised of 76 quick video lessons, with supporting PDFs and material to help you along the way.

Daniel Champagne is an Australian-born guitarist, currently residing in Nashville. Classically trained, Champagne is most widely-known now for his guitar-breaking, crowd-awing fingerstyle perfomances.

Don Adler: Percussion Techniques For Acoustic Guitar: Pickups & Live Sound

Champagne’s style makes heavy use of percussive methods and he has created a course that covers a number of his specific techniques.

The course is organized into a series of 10 percussive fingerstyle etudes (covered over 32 videos). Each etude is focused on a specific technique and application of that technique.

Preston Reed is a world renowned acoustic guitar player and composer. He started out learning classical style, but over time developed a unique fingerstyle approach that incorporates all aspects of the guitar. In fact, he single handedly created his own style of guitar which he calls the “integrated percussive technique.”

Reed has a video course, “Integrated Percussive Technique with Preston Reed”, which goes into depth to teach his style. Over 17 videos, his course covers percussive approaches to left and right hand, slap harmonics, over the neck techniques, and more.

Calum Graham is a Canadian guitar prodigy. He’s won numerous awards, played the Olympics (!), racked up major Youtube views, and been voted one of the Top 30 Under 30 in Acoustic Guitar Magazine.

His percussive fingerstyle approach is intricate and precise. His compositions make full use of many types of percussive techniques – internal rythyms, right handed slapping, tapping, and harmonics.

Percussive Guitar Technique

Most guitar players who play in this style use different tunings like DADGAD or other, rarer tunings, but to start with something that every guitar player knows, we’ll use standard tuning: EADGBE.

Start tapping your feet and try to feel the time in your feet. Hit your guitar with your wrist, then your fingers, wrist, fingers, wrist, like you can see in the video. Use the note pattern of eighth, eighth, quarter, eighth, dotted quarter. Do it until you feel it works.

D and E are the new notes. Use your left hand to tap these notes on the fifth string doing sixteenths, and do it again and again until you feel you’re doing it right and it becomes easy.

It’s important that you don’t move on to exercise 3 if you feel weak with exercise 2. You can find the exercise played slow and fast in the video.

Now we’ll add one step more to exercise 2. We’re going to do sixteenths again with the left hand, and add two new notes, G and A, this time on the sixth string.

Remember to always keep your feet in time. This is extremely important. Also, try to feel comfortable with this one before you go to the next exercise.

OK, we’re at the end if this trip. Now we’ll add the notes C and D to exercise 3, doing sixteenths again on different strings, the fifth string and second string. In addition to all of this, you must hit the sixth string with your right thumb at the end of the exercise.
