Glen Frey est né en 1948 à Dedroit. Il est mort le 18 janvier dernier. Surtout connu pour être l'un des membres fondateurs des Eagles, il a néanmoins sévit auparavant au sein des groupes de Bod Seger ou de Linda Rondstadt. Au sein des Eagles, il jouait de la guitare et des claviers.
Pour lui rendre un hommage indirect, nous allons nous intéresser à la guitare le plus connue de son compère Don Felder, la célèbre Gibson double manche EDS 1275. C’est avec cet instrument qu’il jouait Hotel California sur scène et notamment répondait à Joe Walch sur le solo, l’un des plus connu de tous les temps.
Les premières EDS 1275, seulement 110 en tout, on été produites de 1962 à 1968. Cette guitare est devenue célèbre grâce à Jimmy Page qui l’utilisait sur scène sur Stairway to Heaven ou sur The song Remain The Same. C’est l'un de ces 110 exemplaires que Jimmy page utilisait. Don Felder lui utilisait un modèle reissue produit à partir de 1977.
All Strung Out
C’est une guitare de scène par nature car en réalité les titres studio sont enregistrés sur des modèles plus classiques. Ainsi, sur le solo de Stairway To Heaven Jimmy Page utilise une Telecaster. Don Felder, lui a enregistré l’intro d’Hotel California sur une accoustique Takamine 12 cordes et le solo sur une Les Paul 59' en photo plus bas.Mais sur scène, c’est une autre paire de manche (je n’ai pas résisté...) et une guitare double manche, bien que plus encombrante et plus lourde qu’un modèle classique, permet de passer de l’une à l’autre plus facilement. Le look est là (voir le modèle Hamer Uncle Dick de Rick Nielsen) mais côté épaules et dos on se contente généralement de quelques morceaux pas plus. Autre possibilité, jouer assis comme Slash surKnocking On Heaven Door.
Revenons au modèle de Don Felder. Il a été réédité en 2010 en série limitée, reproduction conforme à celle du te avec ses modificatiosn et les stigmates du temps. 150 exemplaires ont été produits, dont 50 exemplaires signés par Don Felder lui même. Leur prix était à l'avenant 9.174 USD et 12.704 USD pour les modèles signés. Si vous souhaitez voir l'original, c'est possible. Elle se trouve auRock and Roll Hall of Fame de Cleveland dans l'Ohio.
Ce modèle possède un corps, d’une seule pièce, en acajou comme celui des SG dont il s’inspire.L'avantage de ce modèle réside dans son poids relativement léger (5 à 6 kilos tout de même vs 3 kilos pour une SG Standard). La SG est moins épaisse qu’une Les Paul. On imagine le poids d'une double manche sur base de Les Paul Custom….
Unplayed! Gibson Custom Don Felder “hotel California” Eds 1275 Double Neck Aged Alpine White + Coa Ohsc
L’équipement est du Gibson pur jus, sauf en ce qui concerne les cordiers qui ne sont pas des Stop-Bar classiques, mais des modèles spécifiques. C'est surprenant d'autant qu’il existe des modèles 12 cordes chez Gibson avec ce type de cordier, comme la SG ci-dessous (50 th Anniversary SG 12 Strings de 2011).
Les micros typés PAF, en dépit de leurs looks différents, sont les mêmes en haut et en bas. Ceux du bas ne possèdent plus leurs capots ce qui rend leurs bobines apparentes.
La modification principale apportée par Don felder au modèle original concerne la suppression de la tonalité du micro aigu au profit d’une seconde sortie.L’intérêt de cette transformation est d’affecter à chaque manche sa propre sortie et donc sa propre chaine de traitement sonore, comme s'il y avait effectivement deux guitares. Don Felder dirigeait le manche du haut (12 cordes) vers une cabine Leslie, tandis que celui du bas (6 cordes) était dirigé vers un Echoplex.

Reste donc trois potars, un volume pour chacun des micros et une tonalité générale. La sélection des micros se fait grâce à un toggle switch classique (celui du bas). Un second toggle switch est situé entre les deux cordiers. Il sert à sélectionner les manches. En plus des possibilités classiques, manche du haut ou manche du bas, ce switch permet de sélectionner les deux manches simultanément. Cette possibilité permet de produire des sonorités très particulières puisque même si l'un des manches n'est pas joué ses cordes vibrent et provoquent un phénomène appelé résonance par sympathie.
La finitionAged White est vieillie comme son nom l'indique pour faire plus vrai. La bête est livrée dans son étui accompagnée d'une partition d’Hotel California dédicacée par Don Felder.
