In the case of Aaron James, it took coming home to the Prairies to reignite his passion and make a movie he loves.

Guitar Lessons is his new feature-length film, set in High Level and starring Corb Lund opposite newcomer Kaden Noskiye. After a brief stint touring small-town cinemas, the film has been picked up by Cineplex and is slated to open Dec. 2 in Edmonton and Calgary.

“I did what so many of us did and moved to L.A. and I have been working on stuff that I haven’t really liked or been inspired by for 15 years. This film was one of those things that happen out of limitations, ” says James who returned to Calgary when COVID hit. “The folks in High Level decided they wanted to make a movie up there and heard that I was around and not doing much.

Guitar Lessons follows the story of a 15-year-old Métis boy who inherits a guitar from a father he never knew, and in an attempt to connect with his lost father, he becomes determined to learn how to play. This leads him to Ray Mitchell (Lund) a jaded, local oilfield worker with a rockstar past who has the skill he needs to achieve his goal.

The film is based on a short story written by James about his own experience teaching at the Big Stone Cree Nation.

James gained critical acclaim and four AMPIA awards for his 2005 film Hank Williams First Nation which was filmed in Peace River and starred Gordon Tootoosis. The film was then made into a TV series for APTN.

Lund was also cast in James’ 2017 film Get Naked! so taking on the role in Guitar Lessons seemed like a natural progression for him.

“[James] came to my house and leaned on me so hard, I figured I better do it, ” Lund says. “He’s fun anyways. I like doing stuff with him.”

“Part of it is a natural ability, but [Kaden] responded to the material and it became important to him, ” says James. “What I really liked about him is that he showed up knowing his lines, he was professional. He and Corb bonded nicely and stayed in touch.”

“He’s a really good guitar player actually, ” says Lund. “I am trying to help him get into Grant MacEwan’s music program. He’s a good kid.”

About The Guitar Instructor

The coming-of-age tale is also supported by a motley crew of quirky characters played by an array of actors from the High Level and Mackenzie County area including Cree Nakoda Sioux comedian and stuntman Conway Kootenay.

“When I first saw Conway’s Smudge Pan character, I knew I could write for that character, ” says James. “I wrote for that actor in particular.”

High

First-time actor Mary Pruden plays a Kookum who delivers a good beating to Kootenay’s character while he’s attempting to woo an environmental scientist with some dirty talk in Cree.

The film features dialogue in Cree, as well as English, which is a nod to the community that created it. Filmed in and around the northern town of High Level, including the Paddle Prairie Métis Settlement, the community there provided large amounts of support to the production.

“I think over half the cast and crew and infrastructure and even the funding came from First Nations communities up there, ” says Lund. “I feel like the whole movie is a really cool cooperation between those communities.”

While James admits there are certain challenges to scaling a production of this level with a less-seasoned cast and crew, he says he would like to keep making films in what he calls a “community theatre” format.

“Everybody comes and everyone wants to participate, ” says James. “There isn’t much improvisation in the script but in the production, there is a tremendous amount of improvisation. It kinda becomes like a jam session. Let’s see where we can be surprised and every once and a while you get those beautiful accidents.”

The film was initially released in a series of small towns, but a word-of-mouth reputation helped it gain traction and popularity and the opportunity to be shown in the larger markets, which is just how James likes it.

“Distribution is always an issue. But with this one, distribution is looking after itself because people are going home and talking about it. Theatre owners from Estevan to Williams Lake are calling and asking, ‘Are you the guy who’s got this movie?’ Everything — even the distribution — has been very grassroots. And finally, Cineplex called, which opens up our market in a big way.”

“It’s not that I don’t want to watch it. It’s like hearing your voice recorded for the first time. It freaks you out, right? Maybe I’ll get drunk and watch it by myself in a dark room with a blanket over my head, ” he admits.
