Phillip is one of the UK's foremost guitarists and harmonica players. Specialising in slide guitar, in 2008 he travelled to Kolkata, to study under the Indian master Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya. Returning home with an Indian classical slide guitar in tow, he has spent the subsequent ten years touring the world, playing everywhere from Japan to South Africa, Canada to Australia, collecting music along the way. Phillip is also a renowned harmonica player, and his unique beatbox harmonica technique has started the party at festivals across the world, including to a crowd of 50, 000 in Hyde Park (just before Kylie Minogue took to the stage!)
Phillip is an in demand performer whose collaborations with fellow musicians such as Peter Knight (Steeleye Span), Steve Knightley (Show of Hands), and Hannah Martin (Edgelarks), have led to the evolution of a unique instrumental style, and a raft of awards, including a BBC Folk Award.

Phillip has more than ten years teaching experience, from beginners just starting to play guitar, to professionals wanting to hone a specific technique. He teaches from home; via skype; and has also run workshops all over the world for both harmonica and guitar players. He has been a visiting lecturer at both university and secondary school level, sharing his wide love of many types of music, as well as his deep knowledge of instrumental techniques. As a folk musician primarily, his specialisms are folk, world, blues, and related offspring of these styles, such as rock music.
Guitar Gets Easier!
As a self taught musician, Phillip has evolved a teaching technique that makes the learning process efficient and enjoyable. His aim is to equip his pupils with the necessary skills to be able to analyse their playing and improve, so that they can then teach themselves. He is a warm and encouraging teacher, who believes that learning music should be a fun and positive experience, avoiding the pressures and negative criticism that can so often crush creative expression. As such he does not teach through examinations, but instead is lead by what the pupil wishes to learn. He is happy teaching the basics of guitar and harmonica; setting up a guitar to play slide on; bottleneck, fingerstyle, blues, lap slide guitar styles to advanced levels; harmonica maintenance; blues harp, beatbox harmonica, harmonica accompaniment etc. Get in touch to see what he can do for your playing!

I had a conversation with him over potential lessons and he came over as a very confident teacher, this inspired me to go ahead and book lessons. he seems to know what he was talking about, and his knowlage of the genres im into. i have no doubt that this is going to be a great freindship. Tony
Harriet is an amazing tutor she is relly easy to talk too and shes relly helpfull i have learnt a lot in only 2 leassons cant wait for many more

Very pleased with the progress I have made with Matthew as my tutor. He is professional, patient and has provided sufficient challenge to ensure I develop during and between lessons. From being unable to play a chord to playing a couple songs in as many lessons is a great result. Thank you Matt!
