I have been a musician for over 10 years. I started out in my high school big band as a trumpet player before I switched to playing the bass. I completed my studies at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico in 2016 where I was born and have now relocated to the state of Washington. I have been fortunate enough to have the privilege to play with some of Puerto Rico's greatest local players in the Jazz and Latin scene. Read More

I would describe my lesson style as fun, friendly, focused and goal-oriented. If you're a beginner, my goal is to get you up and running on the guitar as soon as possible. if you've played a while, but have reached an impasse as to how to get to the next level, then I zero in on the reasons wh, fill in the gaps, and provide the materials and instruction you'll need to improve. I'm a patient, energetic, understanding, highly-motivated teacher who loves training people to accomplish their musical goals. I teach from the experience of a songwriter and performer, someone who started off as an ear-based, self-taught guitarist and has worked his way up to to a BA in Composition, recorded and released music for three Seattle rock bands, and performs regularly. This diverse background makes me relatiable to students with all different learning styles, interests, and skill sets. Read More

It depends on what the student wants to learn. I am there for them. I do make recommendations such as teaching out of a Hal Leonard instructions books (for beginners) and or CD's Play along CD's. , Chord Theories, voicing s and improvisational techniques for the intermediate students ( i.e. basic blues) if they choose to. I also like for them to record their progress (such as picking a basic tune they have learned) if possible so they can get an idea of what they sound like as another recommendation. Read More

Jonny Akamu — Lessons

No matter where the student starts from, I always spend a significant amount of time in the first lesson discussing with them what they want to gain, what they are interested in, and how much time and effort they want to put into this endevor. It is important to me to understand the student so that I can cater to their needs and desires, and hopefully encourage them to continue playing music. Read More

I feel each of my students are unique. I love watching my students' level of musical understanding progress. I love seeing the dedication and determination begin to heighten as the lessons progress. Within each lesson I point out areas that need to be worked on as well as areas of improvement. Seeing one's progress is the most important element to me for my students. Therefore, I like to record my students quarterly for a few minutes within a lesson to show the mass amounts of improvement they will accomplish. Read More

Group Guitar Lessons & Ensembles

Hi there, my name is Chris and I’m a lifelong musician. I was trained in classical piano by my grandparents, both professional pianists, and have since gone on to play guitar, violin, mandolin, ukulele, and bass guitar.

In my 13 years of teaching, I have had the privilege of training with many professional musicians in southern California, and have participated in teacher/student showcase cover bands, playing bands like ZZ top, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold, and a variety of “top hits” of the 00’s at local bars and block parties.

Guitar,

These days I concentrate my own musical focus to a beautiful and artistic style of classical guitar from southern Spain called Flamenco, but I still love helping others reach their musical dreams across many instruments and styles. My own past focuses have been in heavy metal, folk, rock, blues, video game and movie scores, and classical music.

Jonny loves sharing music. As a teacher, he finds nothing more rewarding than seeing kids and adults discover their instruments and improve their playing. Most importantly, Jonny believes music should be fun. He uses games to teach fundamental techniques so students can learn and play their favorite songs. Some of his formerstudentsare now performing musicians and have been semifinalists at the EMO Sound Off, a battle of the bands for teenagers. Jonny is also a songwriter and made it to be the finals in theAmerican Songwriter Awards.
