Ichika Nito is an incredible guitarist known for his virtuosic combination of fingerstyle and tapping. He has gained a lot of momentum on the platform over the last year in particular, thanks to his catchy mini-songs that often blend math rock and neo soul influences (such as the popular “i miss you”). A few of them are written in some really eccentric and fun tunings, such as CABBAGE, EDAMAME, and EEEEEE.
Another musician leaning towards the technical side, Sarah Longfield is a guitarist / vocalist best known for her two-handed tapping playstyle. She’s been on the platform for over a decade, and has also recently started uploading lessons, product demos, and more to her channel in addition to her mind-blowing original music.

If you watch any amount of guitar content on YouTube, you’ve probably already come across Sungha Jung. His channel – which has thirteen years worth of videos and counting – boasts over six million subscribers and a staggering one billion views. He’s best known for his acoustic fingerstyle renditions of popular songs; whether it’s Ed Sheeran or a Naruto opening, Sungha Jung will likely have an awesome cover of your favorite track.
Few people may be aware of the fact that Tosin Abasi, the founder and lead guitarist of the instrumental progressive metal band Animals As Leaders, has started regularly uploading videos to YouTube. While it goes without saying that he’s one of the most skilled guitarists out there, what stands out in particular is his ‘thumping, ’ a technique he innovated that combines slapping with classical finger picking.
Like Tosin Abasi, Tim Henson is a lead guitarist from an instrumental rock unit (Polyphia) who also maintains a strong presence on YouTube. His work, which blends influences including progressive rock, trap, and pop, is immediately recognizable, and has inspired a wave of other bands that attempt to emulate Polyphia’s sound. On his YouTube channel, he largely posts short song ideas, which at times later find their way onto Polyphia albums. He has recently started also doing walkthroughs of these riffs, which is both incredibly helpful and utterly useless because they’re anything but easy.

Mateus Asato is one of those guitarists who can seemingly do everything – his work spans everything from soulful slow jams to blazing-fast solos. That said, no matter what he’s playing, he never forgets to insert his emotion and distinctive character to his work, and is a great musician to study for that reason.
Yvette Young’s playing is a perfect blend between technique and emotion. Her heavy use of tapping and meter changes are sure to mesmerize those who enjoy complexity, while her colorful chord voicings and melodies are likely to resonate with almost any listener. She’s also the front-woman for the math rock band Covet, which is definitely worth checking out as well.

Last but not least is Li-sa-X, a metal guitarist who’s known for her impeccable covers and equally powerful originals. While she’s currently most known for performing at an incredibly high level for such a young age, she’s truly a professional musician who should be taken seriously regardless of how old she is. Although her upload frequency can vary, Li-sa-X is a guitarist who you should definitely keep tabs on, since it’s only a matter of time before she really blows up.

Before getting into the fingerpicking technique it's important that you know which fingers you're supposed to use when reading sheet music. In the diagram below you can see the letters that represent each finger. The letters come from the Spanish words for each finger. Typically, the pinky finger isn't used in fingerstyle guitar, so it's not labeled.
We'll start by getting a hang of using your thumb while fingerpicking. With this exercise, you'll simply be playing quarter notes with your thumb as you switch between the bottom three strings.

Next, we'll work on using your finger to pick the string. This exercise is similar to the previous one. You'll use your index finger to pick quarter notes on the top three strings.
Once you've got a hang of using your thumb and fingers separately, we'll try combining them. Take it nice and slow and try alternating between using your thumb to play the low E string and using your fingers to play the G, B, and E strings.
Rolling is a much more challenging technique to master. You may need to spend some more time on the previous exercises before trying to challenge some of these more difficult exercises. Rolling is when you use your fingers to go up and down the strings while playing a chord.

First, we'll attempt rolling up. Feel free to work on this as slowly as you might need to to get it sounding clean. If you need to you may want to anchor your hand on the body of the guitar with your wrist or your pinky.
Next, we'll try rolling down. For some people, this is a little bit more challenging, so there's nothing wrong with slowing it right down if you need to. Try playing the exercise below.
Now that you've got the hang of rolling up and rolling down individually we'll try combining the two techniques so that you can perform this rolling exercise.
How Guitar Players Rearrange Fingerstyle Songs On Youtube In 4 Steps
A common technique that's used in fingerstyle music is the constant bass technique. This technique is basically when your thumb plays the bass notes at the same time as your fingers are playing the melody. This technique is great for solo guitar since you are basically your own accompaniment.
This first exercise is very simple. We'll be using a C chord throughout these exercises. You'll just be playing quarter notes on the A string with your thumb while fretting the whole chord.
Once you've got that down, you can try adding a C note on the B string. It takes some coordination to get it sounding clean, but you can feel free to take your time and slow it down as much as you might need to.
