It is essential to learn the different parts and how to tune your ukulele correctly even before trying to learn your first chord. Knowing the proper vocabulary of the ukulele will help you better understand where to place your fingers, hands, and navigate the fretboard easier
Each string has a pitch. It’s important to know that the string closest to the floor is the 1st string. The string closest to you is the 4th string. The 1st string is tuned to an A, the 2nd string an E, the 3rd string is C, and the 4th string is a G as shown in the diagram below. The tuning pegs turn clockwise and counterclockwise to tighten or loosen the strings.
A headstock tuner is a very convenient tool that you clip onto the headstock of the instrument. Once placed on the headstock, the tuner reads the pitches of the strings and registers the pitch on the display. Usually, there is a needle that will move from side to side. This needle indicates whether a pitch is sharp, flat, or in tune.

If the pitch of the string is in tune, the needle will be directly in the center of the display. If the pitch of the string is too high, the pitch is sharp or overpitch. This means the string is too tight and needs to be loosened until the needle reaches the center of the display. On the other hand, a string that is under pitch is flat and needs to be tightened until the needle reaches the center of the display.
Step 1: Clip the tuner to the headstock and turn it on. Note: Most headstock tuners are designed to tune different instruments and contain different instrument settings. After turning on the tuner, make sure it is set to the “ukulele” setting. The instrument setting on most headstock tuners can be changed by pushing the power button several times. The instrument name will be indicated at the bottom of the tuner.
Step 3: Pluck/strum the string, see where it registers on the display. Now turn the tuning pegs slowly clockwise or counterclockwise tighten or loosen the string.

Step 4: Tighten or loosen the string until the needle reaches the center of the tuner indicating that the string is in tune.
Because a tuner is designed to tune any note, it is possible to tune a string to the wrong pitch even though it may read that the pitch is “in tune”. This is where it is important to know the chromatic scale. The chromatic scale consists of all 12 notes that are half steps apart or right next to each other.
For example, the A string is accidentally tuned to a G, and G is below A in pitch. This means the string needs to be tightened until the tuner display reads “A”. Make sure to check that the note on the display reads the notes that you want your ukulele to be tuned to.

In this lesson, I’m excited to demonstrate how all of the guitar chord shapes you already know can be used on a ukulele - allowing you to play many of the songs you already know. I’ll explain how this is the case, how to translate 6-string chords on to a 4-string instrument, and talk about some of the differences in pitch you’ll need to understand. If nothing else, I want you to realize that applying your guitar skills to a ukulele is something that’s likely much easier than you ever thought it would be.
The Best Ukulele For Beginners
Each chord shape can be used on both instruments (play the thinnest four strings of any guitar chord on the ukulele). You can play any progression of chord “shapes” you know on guitar on a ukulele - and they’ll sound great (though be in a different pitch than the guitar).
Each chord uses different shapes on guitar vs. ukulele. This requires you to disassociate the shape from the name - since the same shape on guitar makes a different sound on a ukulele.
Every key has a I-IV-V (one-four-five) progression, and that progression always sounds pleasing – no matter the key. Here are some of those progressions in some of the more common keys, showing both the ukulele and guitar chord shapes needed. Notice how relationship of the chord shapes remains similar between both instruments.

The reason I use Songsheet Generator (there are other, similar programs and web apps) is that it allows me to print song sheets in my preferred format, i.e. landscape in two “cells” (columns) per sheet. If fine-tuning of print and/or screen display and/or html output is not important to you and easy switching between different instrument tunings is more of a priority, then you might want to have a look at alternatives such as Linkesoft Songbook or OnSong

Songsheet Generator comes with pre-installed chord definitions for guitar EADGBE and ukulele GCEA. This allows you to print or display song sheets with chord grids for these tunings. However, you can configure Songsheet Generator to produce chord grids for other tunings.
Stewart Greenhill contributed his Ukulele resources to Songsheet Generator. Stewart’s ukulele chord definitions for standard GCEA ukulele tuning are now built into Songsheet Generator. So, you no longer have to download the chordrc file from Stewart’s web site in order to access ukulele chord definitions in Songsheet Generator.

The Custom Chord Editor is also useful if you routinely use a different voicing to the default chord definition in Songsheet Generator. This applies whether you are using the default definitions (for EADGBE and GCEA tuning) or if you have completely re-defined the chords for a different tuning, eg. DGBE.
F7 for ukulele (GCEA) is defined by default as 2313. That is, listing the strings from “nose to toes” (the first string nearest your nose to the fourth string nearest your toes!):
