NAMM 2020: Ibanez has gotten its new year off to a strong start with a slew of fresh releases ahead of Winter NAMM 2020. The brand has added a total of 19 new s to its catalogue for this year’s January convention.
The updated AEG series is championed by the AEG200, which sports a solid Sitka spruce top, okoume back and sides, nyatoh neck and Ovangkol bridge and fingerboard. It also comes with an Ibanez T-bar undersaddle pickup and AEQ-TTS preamp complete with onboard tuner.

The middle-child of the AEG line-up comes with a flamed maple top, sapele back and sides, nyatoh neck, and walnut bridge and fingerboard. The AEG70 comes with the same electronics as the AEG200, along with Ibanez Advantage bridge pins and chrome die-cast tuners.

The AEG62 is an entry-level that comes with a sapele top, back and sides. A nyatoh neck and walnut fingerboard complete the tonewood profile while the electronics set-up continue with the Ibanez T-bar and AEQ-TTS.
The AEG50 is another entry-level offering but trades the sapele top of the AEG62 for spruce. It is also available as a nylon-string .
The new Ibanez Artwood s are divvied up into two grand concerts (ACFS580CE and ACFS300CE), a dreadnought (AWFS300CE) and a grand concert baritone (ACFS380BT). All models feature a solid spruce top, five-piece pau ferro/mahogany neck and either pau ferro or okoume back and sides.

Another consistent feature across all four models is the use of Ibanez’s DP1 preamp and T-bar undersaddle and block contact pickup system, which adds in a pickup at the neck joint. Stereo outputs also allow users the option to run both pickups through a mono signal or split the undersaddle and block contact pickups to separate outputs.
The first AZ model to feature an all-ash body, the AZ2202A Prestige also comes with an S-Tech roasted maple fingerboard, dual Seymour Duncan Hyperion humbuckers and Ibanez’s dyna-MIX10 switching system, which delivers 10 unique pickup combinations for various voicing options.
The AZ2204B Prestige sports the same dyna-MIX10 switching system and Seymour Duncan Hyperion pickups as the AZ2202A, but exchanges the neck humbucker for two single coils. This Super Strat-style also comes with Gotoh Magnum Lock tuners with height-adjustable posts and a Gotoh T1802 tremolo bridge.

The five new AZ Premium s come with either poplar burl or Bocote top, but otherwise continue to feature the same specifications as the traditional AZ Premium series like basswood bodies, roasted maple necks, Seymour Duncan Hyperion pickups, and Gotoh hardware.
The limited-edition RG6PPBFX Premium comes with a standard American basswood body and features a Wizard neck made from 11 pieces of maple, walnut and purpleheart. Its pickups are a set of coloured Bare Knuckle Aftermath humbuckers that match the ’s Tropical Seafloor finish, and also comes wired to a coil-tap switch for greater tonal versatility. The RG6PPBFX Premium is one of the few non-multi-scale s to feature Ibanez’s mono-rail fixed bridge.
The new regular production RGs feature American basswood bodies, poplar burl tops and 11-piece Wizard necks. The complementing DiMarzio Covered Fusion Edge humbuckers can also be coil-tapped like the RG6PPBFX Premium via a switch located on the lower bout of the body. Unsurprisingly, Dennis Fano’s Solus earns a spot on this list. The Novo is another sophisticated and immaculately finished offset-bodied six-string, powered by a single Fralin T-style single-coil in the bridge position (also available as a P-90 version). Other specs include a tempered maple neck, a 9.5-inch-radius rosewood fretboard, clay dots, 22 frets and an unbleached bone nut.
Eastman’s SB55/v-SB is a roaring rock ’n’ roll beast. The brand keeps it simple and straightforward for this single-cut, opting for a cap-less okoume mahogany body, one-piece mahogany neck, ebony pickguard and a single Lollar Dog Ear P-90 to supply the muscle.

At long last, Tom Morello’s not-so-secret Fender signature Strat was shown to the world at NAMM 2020. The Soul Power Stratocaster is based on a modified Designer Series Strat, and features a raft of mods and customisations that the Rage Against The Machine noisenik himself uses. These include a kill-switch toggle, a recessed Floyd Rose trem system and that iconic Soul Power decal.

Gibson’s show-stopping Non-reverse Firebirds, whose Maestro Vibrola trem and vintage-inspired colours made them some of our favourite s of the show. According to the brand, it intentionally chose these bright colours to almost give the Firebird a “pawn shop” look.
Taylor‘s Grand Orchestra series adapts the V-class bracing construction for use in the brand’s biggest and deepest body shape, improving sustain and dynamic range. In addition to V-class, the new 618e features figured maple back and sides with a Sitka spruce top.
The Comet is the latest addition to Harmony‘s Standard Series, and is based on the 60s-era H-72. Interestingly, this is also the rejuvenated brand’s first-ever semi-hollow design. It sports Harmony’s gold foil pickups – tuned for a warmer and fuller tone – and a double-cutaway mahogany body with a mahogany set neck.

One of D’Angelico‘s rarest s, the Deluxe Bedford SH is a three-pickup semi-hollow of which only 100 will be made. It features a basswood body, a three-piece maple/walnut/maple satin-finished neck and an ebony fingerboard. Electronics-wise, the uses two Seymour Duncan STR-52 Five-Two’s in the neck and middle positions, and a Seymour Duncan SM-1b mini-humbucker in the bridge.

Gibson has announced a massive overhaul of its Epiphone brand for NAMM 2020. Arguably the most notable of the changes is the introduction of a new larger ‘Kalamazoo’ headstock shape for its Epiphone Les Paul and SG models.

Definitely one of our favourites of the show so far, the Gibson 60th Anniversary 1960 Les Paul Standards will be available in three variations: V1, V2 and V3. Here we check out two V1s – which features the same specs as a ’59 Les Paul – one in an “unfaded” finish and another in an Antiquity Burst finish.

One of the most exciting NAMM 2020 developments so far has been Gibson’s massive overhaul of its Epiphone brand. Key in this overhaul is the new larger headstock shape for its Gibson-derived Epiphone Les Paul and SG models. These include the Epiphone Les Paul Junior, Les Paul Special, SG Special, Les Paul Standard 50s, Les Paul Standard 60s, SG Standard and 61 SG Standard w/Maestro. Namm 2020: Fsc Guitars Are Coming To The Music Zoo
After doing the rounds on the rumour mill, the Fender Tom Morello Soul Power Stratocaster has finally made a proper appearance.
