Is Guitar Hero 3 Backwards Compatible

The launch of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is coming up quick. You can bet that we'll be bringing you all of the juicy details just as soon as I get my hands on it. I do have a tidbit of information regarding compatibility issues with the new Les Paul.

There have been rumors around that the X-Plorer will/won't work with Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. I decided to go straight to the source and find out what Red Octane had to say about compatibility of the old and new controllers. Mind you, I only talked about the 360 controllers, as they have really been the only ones in question. Hit the jump for the full transcript of my Q&A with Bryan Lam of Red Octane.

: A lot of people have been asking if the X-Plorer is going to work on GH3Red Octane: Yes, the 360 X-Plorer guitar will indeed work on Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.: Would it stand to reason that the Les Paul is wired the same as the X-Plorer? ie, would the Les Paul work with say GH2 for the 360Red Octane: The GHIII guitars are fully backwards compatible and will work on GHII 360.: Naturally people are wondering if they would work for Rock Band, though I'm pretty sure you guys wouldn't have any information on thatRed Octane: Unless we had their software to test it on (which we do not), then we don't know if it's compatible.

: Assuming that Harmonix went with a similar controller configuration to that used in Guitar Hero 2, they would in theory be compatible, no?

There you have it, The Les Paul will work on Guitar Hero 2, and The X-Plorer will work for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. Though there's no way to actually confirm this, I would venture a guess that since the X-Plorer has been confirmed to work on Rock Band, that the Les Paul will as well. Personally, I like a little variety, so it would be nice if all of the controllers played nice together, but we'll have to wait and see.
