Learn Anything From Anyone

Our guitar, bass, and ukulele teachers enjoy working with the diverse group of students here at Scottsdale School of Music. We have young children, high school students, young professionals, and retired adults visiting our studio on a weekly basis, and we have experience working with students at each level.

Even if you’ve never held a guitar or ukulele before, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you can start to make music. We can teach you some basic chords like A minor, E minor, C major, E7 and more, and you’ll have enough knowledge to chord along with popular songs. We will also introduce you to finger picking, transposing, scales, and how to play melodies while accompanying yourself.

Whether you started as a beginner with the guitar teachers here at Master Keys Music Academy, or if you already have years of guitar study under your belt from elsewhere, we can help you break through your current skill plateau. For some guitarists, that means learning how to write and perform your own guitar solos (or whole songs). Or perhaps you want to learn how to improvise on the blues scale or play a different genre, like baroque music.

Every student learns a different way and I always take the first lesson to evaluate what the student is passionate about. Some students want to get straight to playing songs and some want to learn sheet music first. I am comfortable with starting anyway they need. If the student starts to get bored after a few lessons I try and bring in new toys related to the instrument such as a new kind of cymbal or a slide guitar to try and spark some inspiration again! My passion is playing guitar, listening to music, and teaching music. I graduated from Arizona Conservatory for the Arts and Academics in 2015, and then graduated from Northern Arizona University with a Bachelor's Degree for Music Performance (Emphasis in Guitar). I have been in many bands, and have shared the stage at Alice Cooper's Christmas Pudding with Alice Cooper, Motley Crue, KISS, and others. I have studied classical guitar for many years, and have been performing rock and blues since I can remember. Read More

We start with fundamentals of music theory, ear training, and composition. We find the songs and styles you want to learn and then make them make sense, through small assignments, that build into the finished product. I believe that music is a way for people to express themselves on a deep, energetic level; that it is Life expressing through us as well, and that it is an essential part of Life itself.  My goal is to help each student not only learn the mechanics and fundamentals of their instrument, but to also be INSPIRED by the music they're making and sometimes creating.  I want it to be a source of joy in their life! I have a very personal and relaxed way of teaching that helps each student enjoy and advance on their chosen instrument at their pace. I prefer 60 minute sessions to have the time to fully evaluate and advance from the previous lesson and to move on to new material. I use the student's preferred style of music to teach them how to play, and expand their styles and technique from there. Read More

Teaching is a huge responsibilty that I do not take light heartedly. If we as teachers do a suburd job, it will have a huge effect on a students over all life. Musical education teaches us about the mind and body and balance between the two. It teaches us logic, problem solving, and creative thinking in balance with eachother. It teaches us posture, breath, how to think. It teaches us to listen, and to communicate, to engage with others, it teaches us work ethic and how to colloborate with anyone. Read More

Trumpet players cannot sit down and practice for hours every day. It can be painful and often enforces bas habits instead of good ones! I feel that setting small, realistic goals and having short, focused practice sessions makes for more efficient progress on the trumpet.

If your child loves music and is drawn to a loud, melody driven instrument, then they are ready to start the trumpet! Typically, it is best to wait until the student's primary teeth begin replacing their temporary teeth. Due to this, waiting until 4th or 5th grade to start trumpet is best.

With a focused practice journal and small goals, progress will be made shockingly quickly! Paying due attention to fundamentals is a sure way to encourage rapid growth on the trumpet.

I became a musician because of my high school band director, who was also a trumpet player. Since then, my professors at the undergraduate and graduate levels have been wonderful mentors to me and helped launch me into my professional music career.

Honestly, I wanted to play the trombone when I was in 7th grade. But, I was riding the bus to school at the time, so my mom got me a trumpet instead because it fit on the bus seat better!

I think I am proudest of being a diverse trumpet player. It might seem like musicians have to pick what genre they belong in, but all of my mentors have encouraged me to be well-versed in every style. Nothing else could have allowed me to perform professionally with so many different groups.

The best thing to strive for on the trumpet is simply having a good sound. That might seem like a duh statement, but focusing on that will solve a lot of other problems on the instrument without having to think about them.

Guitar Teachers In Scottsdale And Phoenix

Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?

I typically stick with Arban, Clarke, and Bai Lin for fundamentals; these are part of my daily routines. For etudes, I love Brandt, Charlier, Getchell, and Bosquet.

A normal practice session begins with a few deep breaths, a clear visualization of what I want to accomplish before I begin
