Sie besitzt n gleichen Korpus wie die Duo-Sonic, ebenso die zwei elektromagnetischen Tonabnehmer in Einzelspulen-Bauweise (Single Coil). Neu an r Mustang waren eine verbesserte elektrische Schaltung und ein neu entworfenes Vibratosystem ähnlich m r Fenr Jaguar und r Fenr Jazzmaster. Die Produktion wur 1981 zunächst eingestellt; seit 1986 stellt Fenr Japan eine Neuauflage r Fenr Mustang her. Unter m Markennamen Fresher wurn ebenfalls von einem japanischen Hersteller Kopien angeboten.
Die Mustang gehört neben m 1966 vorgestellten Fenr Mustang Bass zu n letzten Instrumenten, die vom Firmengrünr Leo Fenr mitentwickelt wurn. Nach m Verkauf r Firma Fenr an n Medienkonzern CBS im Oktober 1964 zog Leo Fenr sich im Laufe s Jahres 1965 zurück.
Die Mustang folgt wie bereits die E-Gitarren-Molle Fenr Telecaster und die Fenr Stratocaster m grundlegenn Konstruktionsprinzip r Firma Fenr: Auf einen massiven Korpus wird ein Hals aus Ahornholz geschraubt. Für n Korpus wird jedoch Fenr-untypisch Pappelholz or (sehr selten in alten Mollen vorzufinn) Mahagoni verwent. Die Stimmmechaniken befinn sich in einer Linie auf r oberen Seite r asymmetrischen Kopfplatte. Die Elektronik ist auf ein aus Kunststoff bestehens Schlagbrett montiert, das sich unter n Gitarrensaiten auf m Korpus befint. Die Mustang wur zu Beginn in zwei Versionen mit einer kurzen (22, 5 Zoll/21 Bün) und einer langen (24 Zoll/22 Bün) Mensur angeboten, wobei die Produktion r Hälse mit kurzer Mensur wegen schlechter Verkaufszahlen schnell aufgegeben wur. Die Elektronik besteht aus zwei Single-Coil-Tonabnehmern, die über zwei Schiebeschalter sowie je einen Lautstärke- und Klangregler verwaltet wern. Durch die bein Schalter, die jeweils drei Schaltmöglichkeiten besitzen, sind mit r Mustang insgesamt vier verschiene Klänge abrufbar.

Obwohl die Mustang ursprünglich von Fenr als „Stunt Mol“ gedacht war, gibt es nicht wenige bekannte Gitarristen, die dieses Instrument besitzen und auch auf r Bühne einsetzen. Namentlich erwähnt seien Walter Becker von Steely Dan, Shakira, Johnny Winter ebenso wie David Byrne, John Frusciante, Todd Rundgren, Graham Coxon, PJ Harvey, Patti Smith, Brody Dalle und Adrian Belew.

Dieser Logik folgend, ging die Gitarre mit m Kunstnamen „Jag-Stang“ (Jaguar und Mustang) in die Produktion. Die Gitarre aus m Teen-Spirit-Musikvio, eine 1969er Competition Lake Placid, wur 2022 für 4, 5 Millionen US-Dollar versteigert.
