Acoustic Guitar Design Forum

I have been AWOL from the Forum since last year, which is weird, because this community is one of my favorite places to spend quality time. So many excellent people, with so much talent, populating the comments boards here, and so many great friends that I've made over the years.

Though this Forum is not the place to belabor the details, suffice to say that a major family emergency erupted unexpectedly on Christmas Eve last year, compounded by several months of continuing crises, involving my elderly mother and disabled older sister. I had to leave home and attend to this ongoing sequence of chaos and breakdowns. By the time dust began to settle, and things began to shape up into a new normal, I had lost four months of work and income, and and my health took a nasty downturn too. All in all, it was not a very auspicious beginning to the year!

World

By the time May rolled around, I got myself back into functional condition and back into the workshop. Making guitars is tremendously good therapy! So I managed to pull myself more or less back together and start making large quantities of exotic wood dust again. Back on familiar ground at last!

Umgf 00 Owner's Club

The first project I started was a Consort 000 model with some unique custom features, for my good friend and patron, Jim G., actually the fourth guitar that Jim has asked me to build for him. I shipped the guitar out to Jim this past Monday, and he received it on Wednesday. So far, the reports from Jim have been positive. I think it's safe to say that Jim likes my work.

Here are some photos of Jim's newest Edwinson. It's my Triple-0 model, with back and sides of some wildly figured Padouk, a Tunnel 14 Redwood top, and all Ziricote trim and appointments.

This Consort 000 is a fraternal twin sister to another guitar I made for Jim last year, which is a Crossover Nylon String we named the Artemis. It's made with the same woods, and a lot of similar features and specifications. Here are a couple pictures of that one:

New Edwinson Performance Sc Multiscale!

Padouk and Tunnel 14 Redwood are an awesome tonewood combo for both nylon string and steel string guitars. I've made a couple other guitars with these woods, and they've all been great players with very expressive and colorful tone. They are surprisingly loud too. Fortunately, I still have a good stash of these woods.

Jim prefers wider than standard fingerboards. The Artemis nylon string guitar has a 2 1/8 nut width, and the Consort 000 has a 2 nut width. The high E strings are set in from the fingerboard edge 3/16. Jim has been playing guitars for a long time, and he knows what he likes.

Another feature on both guitars is that the back is trimmed with a double-course of bindings, and given a 1/4 radius round-over, for comfort. These are a little challenging to make, but well worth the effort.

A new feature on the steel string version is a new bridge design- probably my most conventional bridge so far. I didn't realize it when I was first sketching it out, but it seems that I took my (subliminal) inspiration for this bridge from Tom Sands, whose work I have tremendous admiration for. Tom was an apprentice to Ervin Somgyi, and his guitars occupy that rarefied realm of the best of the best. I'm glad that Tom's work is showing up here on the Forum pretty often these days.

Stay tuned; I have a new project I'd like to show you also- a Performance EP-SC Multiscale guitar, with amazing Cocobolo back and sides, and a superb Adirondack top. I just finished up the construction on the soundbox yesterday, except for the fine sanding. I'd like to show it to you from the beginning, as with a good old fashioned build thread. For now, Sunday chores need to be attended to, so I'll jump back in shortly with some new stuff. Thanks for looking!

Let me be the first to welcome you back - happy to hear you’re ok again - out of the crap and doing what you love !

Acoustic Guitar Bridge Design In Easel?

So glad you are back and your life is under control again. I love the fretboard inlays on the first guitar you showed especially the ribbon coming from the star on the 12 fret. Awesome work.

Thank you, Klaus! Did I hear through the grapevine that you'll be attending the B.I.G. Show again this year? I hope to see you there.

Jim wanted to follow a celestial theme on his two sister guitars. So we did the 3-D stars in white MOP and black MOP. They're not as easy as they look to pull off.

Show Us Your Sj

On the Consort steel string, I used a bookmatched Ziricote headstock plate that has these little slivers of sapwood. I got the idea to make them into a couple of shooting stars.

I wanted to mention to everyone that I had planned to attend the B.I.G. Show again this year, my fourth time as an exhibitor. But because of the bomb crater in the middle of my plans for this year, I regretfully had to cancel. There was no way I could have built any spec guitars to bring. Not to mention, four months of lost income, and having to work hard to get back on track with my custom build commitments...

NK

However, as fortunes tend to ebb and flow in inscrutable ways, my great friend, and also patron of the Arts, Ken Hobbs, invited me to attend this year anyway, as his guest! Ken has very generously supported Joel and me during our attendance at this event for each year previous. We drive to Ken's home in Lake Charles, LA, which is almost exactly the halfway point on the fifteen hour drive from Fairhope to New Braunfels, where Ken and his lovely wife Eilene put us up for the night. And then on to New Braunfels, after a night of relaxation, and memorable dinners that Ken cooks up. He could be a Michelin-starred chef, if he'd decided to make that his life's work.

So Joel and I will be there. I am not going to be an official exhibitor this year, though Tom has generously invited me to bring a couple of guitars anyway, and find space near Joel's display to put them up. I'm also making myself available as a roadie if anyone needs help with their gear and setup.

So I am really looking forward to seeing so many of my best friends and colleagues there again this year! It's difficult to adequately express how much gratitude I feel for everyone involved.

Hi, Paul, Hi, Cindy! Thank you for your good wishes, much appreciated. I wish we could meet up at Tom and Kathy's this year, but I'm sure you'll be there in spirit. And I appreciate your input on the new bridge. I really like it too. Have a look at Tom Sands guitars. That's clearly where I took inspiration for this new bit of sculpture. just a really classy look, I think.

Back in the day, when I was just hanging out my shingle as a professional luthier, my bridge designs were, umm, not exactly everyone's cup of tea. The original Talon series of bridges were kind of dangerous and aggressive looking, like some sort of Ninja weapon. They did make a big impression on people, whether they liked them or not; and that was a big first step in the Edwinson guitars getting some unmistakable brand identity. I still make the Talon bridges, if anyone wants one. But I've never been content to make endless repetitions of the same thing, so evolving the designs on my guitars is a big part of my M.O. Here's a Talon style Multiscale bridge from 2015.

Build

Here's a quick preview of what's coming next. It's an EP-SC Multiscale, my largest guitar model, with Cocobolo back and sides, and a really posh Adirondack Spruce top. I'll be showing photos of pretty much the full process of making this guitar, which is going to my great new friend, Ron T., who hails from North Carolina.

Hey Steve, I’m so glad things are getting better for you! These guitars look great, as usual, and Julie and I are looking forward to seeing you again at BIG4. Dave

Hi, Dave! I'm so glad that I will be at B.I.G. after all. Looking forward to some quality hang time with you. Laissez les bon temps rouler!

Hey, Bob! So glad you're still enjoying your Zephyr 00. I recall that's a pretty nice little guitar. I'll always remember your visit here to pick it up- and the case being delivered by UPS right when you were pulling out of the driveway. The timing was perfect.

Nice to be back! I'm going to get pretty detailed on the current build. It's going really well, and it's going to a great guy. Looking forward to seeing you at Tom and Kathy's- time is passing quickly, isn't it!
