Zoom has launched a new USB audio interface for guitarists called the GCE-3, and it's tiny. Designed to unobtrusively fit in a pocket or gig bag, the interface works with the company's amp emulation and effects simulation software so players can plug in and capture riff creations wherever inspiration hits.
The full name of the 80 x 106 x 29 mm (3.14 x 4.17 x 1.14 in), 90 g (3.17 oz) unit kind of gives its game away. The GCE-3 Guitar Lab Circuit Emulator has been designed to work alongside the company's amplifier and effects simulation software – Guitar Lab.
This Mac/Windows software suite gives users the same amp models, effects and patches available in Zoom's G5n, G3n, G3Xn, B3n G1 Four, G1X Four, B1 Four and B1X Four pedals. But without having to make space in the gig bag for bulky hardware.

The GCE-3 is essentially a mini multi-FX pedal for the desktop, with three teeny footswitches up top for calling up emulations without having to use a trackpad or mouse, and scroll controls for accessing patch banks and presets.
It's connected to a computer or laptop running Guitar Lab over USB-C, with the guitar being plugged into the instrument jack to the side for zero lag performance. There's a 3.5 mm aux input too, for feeding in backing tracks from a digital audio player, and a headphone out with its own volume control.
The unit features its own digital signal processor, which takes the strain off of the laptop's own CPU, and benefits from 24-bit signal conversion, 32-bit signal processing and 44.1 kHz sampling frequency for quality sonic output.

As well as a free download of Guitar Lab, the GCE-3 also comes with a free license for the Cubase LE music production software from Steinberg.
While Paul is loath to reveal his age, he will admit to cutting his IT teeth on a TRS-80 (although he won't say which version). An obsessive fascination with computer technology blossomed from hobby into career before hopping over to France for 10 years, where he started work for New Atlas in 2009. Now back in his native Blighty, he serves as Managing Editor in Europe.Headphones – Use headphones to avoid problems with hearing an echo if you are trying to perform in sync with the instructor. Something like Sony MDR-7506 headphones works well.
Good Microphone or Audio Interface – Use a high quality microphone or invest in an audio interface to have higher quality sound and so the instructor can hear you clearly and loudly. This will also help you to perform more in ‘sync’ with the instructor. (Most laptops with built-in microphones are not adequate and will not produce high quality sound). Check your computer to see what ports are available such as USB A, USB C, thunderbolt, etc. (The port type on your computer will limit what model audio interface or mic that you can connect).

A desktop Blue Yeti USB microphone should work well for a basic setup to pick up your voice and acoustic guitar. If you already own a microphone with the standard XLR connector on the back (such as a Shure SM57 or Shure SM58 mic), a simple 2 channel audio interface like a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (3rd Gen) USB audio interface will work and allow you to plug in your guitar directly with a cable in the 2nd channel. PreSonus Studio 26c is another 2 channel interface option or an Motu m2 USB-C 2 channel interface. Another option is an MOTU UltraLite-mk5 18×22 USB Audio Interface .
Wired Internet -Use a wired ethernet connection (if you have one) rather than wireless to avoid audio dropouts and provide a more reliable experience. If your laptop or device doesn’t have a built in ethernet jack you can purchase a USB to ethernet adapter. Connect the USB port to your computer or device and an ethernet cable to the adapter. Connect the other end of the ethernet cable to your router.
Extra Monitor (Optional) – Connecting an extra monitor (if your computer or laptop supports it), can be very useful to see a full screen video on monitor of the instructor and yourself and a full worksheet on the another monitor or screen. Zoom supports ‘dual monitor’ mode – in Zoom > Preferences > General > Check the ‘Use dual monitors’ box. (Restart Zoom after checking this box for dual monitor support to take effect).

Adjustable Webcam (Optional) – In order for the instructor to see you and your guitar simultaneously you may need to purchase an additional camera. A Logitech Brio is a good higher end option as this has 3 different viewing angles and can give wider to close up views.
Zoom very frequently updates their desktop client software and has been improving the audio capabilities to handle more professional sound. Update your Zoom software so you have these newer options.
It is recommended you check your Audio settings in Zoom before every guitar lesson and verify that your headphones and microphone or audio interface is still selected and set up correctly. (As of Feb 28th, 2023, the new option to choose and select the Audio Input Channel(s) from your audio interface – Ex. Universal Audio Apollo, will NOT be saved in Zoom! You will need to manually remember and select the appropriate input channels every time you begin a new Zoom session).

Make sure you turn Original Sound for Musicians to On if you are using an audio interface otherwise your guitar sound will cut in and out.
On a Macintosh computer you can quickly open up the Preferences pane in Zoom by using the shortcut key: command + ,

By default Zoom will only be able to see channels 1 & 2 of an audio interface. If you have more than 2 channels on your audio interface and you plug in your guitar to channel 3, Zoom will not be able to see or use that signal without additional software. (This is only true, prior to the late January 16th 2023 release of the mac Zoom client version 5.13.5 (14826)).

For beginners, to keep things simple it is strongly recommended to use a high quality USB microphone, such as a Blue Yeti or a simple 2 channel audio interface.
Setup is more complex if you need to use additional channels (other than channel 1 & 2) of your Audio Interface with Zoom. For instance, if you have an 8 channel audio interface and your vocal microphone plugged into channel 3 and guitar in channel 5, you
(FYI: On January 16th, 2023, Zoom updated their Mac & Windows software to recognize more than the first two channels of an audio interface. Make sure you have Zoom desktop client version 5.13.5 (14826) or above for the Mac to avoid going through this more advanced set up procedure).

Rogue Amoeba makes software called Loopback for the Mac that can take various channels the audio interface and combine them into 2 channels (1 and 2). Loopback also allows you to use different audio sources and programs such as Logic Pro, MainStage, Music (formerly called iTunes), Capo, Guitar Pro, etc and route them together into channels 1 & 2.

You may also need Loopback to route Zoom’s output (the audio of the person or people you are connected to) into the Zoom’s ‘Speaker’ Audio setting if you are having problems hearing the output from Zoom via your audio interface
Also need another program such as Audio Hijack to capture the output of your mixing software (such as Apple Logic or Apple MainStage) and output it the profile you created in Loopback. (with the versions of Zoom late Jan 2023 & beyond, you should not need this).
