HUNTSVILLE, abama -- He wears cool-looking hats and plays instruments made out of cigar boxes. Chapel Hill, N.C. slide guitar wizard Justin Johnson so writes and performs what he cls innovative roots blues and gypsy jazz, inspired by the likes of Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and Django Reinhardt.
Catch Johnson at Flying Monkey Arts on Dec. 29 for $10. The show starts at 8 p.m., but a 6 p.m. cigar-box guitar slide demonstration and lesson is included with ticket purchase.
One of the most fascinating aspects of cigar box guitars, in my opinion, and what got me interested in them was a lot of blues legends started out on one-string diddley bows or cigar box guitars. A lot of times people in the rur South would end up making instruments out of whatever they had around. You end up learning a different way, approaching your instrument a different way. It gives you a whole different outlook. Apart from the music art form, from the woodworking aspect, those elements attract me very much.

I was curious where the title to your song Two Thieves Dancing and a Runaway Train came from – especily since l your music is instrument and without vocs.
A lot of times when I'll write new songs I won't have the title for them and I'll be performing them. Usuly if I'm performing a song that I wrote that doesn't have a title yet, I'll ask the audience if they have any suggestions to write the down on the mailing list or write them down and give them to me. And that song was one of the hardest to name. We got suggestions, but nothing rely fit. But a lot of the suggestions had to do with thieves or dancing or trains, so we sort of combined l the suggestions into one title.
I would say probably Jack White. He has a rely good knowledge of the old blues, where it comes from and how it relates to music today without changing the raw root of it.

You were recently featured in a story on the Guitar World website. A lot of guitar players grow up reading that magazine.
When I was starting out, Guitar World rely helped broaden my knowledge of history and what guitar players were out there. A lot of those classic rock songs, from Zeppelin to Black Sabbath, that were bringing the blues into the rock rem, I knew those bands by name but I never understood who the actu guitar players were until I started reading those magazines. OK, Jimmy Page is the guitar player in Led Zeppelin, and now I can look at him specificly and see what draws me to that music.
As an instrument artist, what do you do to hold an audience's attention, since singing and lyrics are what many listeners tune-in to the most in a song?

When I started out on a solo career, I knew that would be my main chlenge. And I constantly reassess that. If you have a strong melody, good rhythm and good harmony, it's going to catch people's attention whether there are words or not. If someone were to play a Beatles song, but with the melody, someone would still be singing ong to it. And usuly at my shows, I'll have up to a dozen different stringed instruments [including mandolin and tradition guitars] on the stage, and I'll record (and loop) one of them live on the spot and grab another (instrument) and layer it and another one and another one. I think those two ideas combined work well.
