How much money did they make last year compared to the year before? Who’s the new CEO? Is the company expanding? What’s their marketing strategy? And let’s not forget market share because that’s a good indication of how big a splash the business has made in its industry.
All of these are good indicators to follow. But some businesses transcend those markers. They exist simply because someone wanted to follow their dream and create something special — something others could share.
The latter is a pretty good description of Pasadena Guitars. Jeff Taylor didn’t start the business in 2008 along with partner Jon Boyer because he was hungry for profits. And he certainly wasn’t looking to dominate the market. No, he launched Pasadena Guitars because he had a love for music — and especially guitars.

Taylor wanted to provide an alternative to the mega music stores like Guitar Center and Sam Ash that pretty much sell your basic off-the-rack guitars. Now I’m not knocking those stores because you can find some great guitars there.
And notice I said Pasadena Guitars “was” different. That’s right, the past tense is correct in this case because the store’s last day of operation was Wednesday.
They didn’t have a big going-away party or a frantic “Everything Must Go” sale, although they are planning to set up an e-commerce website to sell off whatever inventory remains.

“It’s a little busy, actually, ” she said. “We had up to 10 people at a time come in yesterday. It’s been busy running around trying to help everybody … but busy in a good way.”
Taylor, who never smoked a day in his life, died of lung cancer on Thanksgiving. Now I’d like to be able to say I knew Jeff well. But the honest truth is, I didn’t.
I figure I must have met him when I stopped in at the store a couple of times last year, but I couldn’t swear to it.
