The following basic guitar chords for beginners will form the foundation of your chords. Learning these chords and their shapes will help you in learning many other guitar chords.
The first part of this post will explain how to read guitar chord charts and then move onto playing the actual guitar chords.
So that you can understand this post – and guitar chord charts wherever you come across them – I have explained how the guitar chord charts work in the diagrams below.
The Six Open Strings On A Guitar
The “x” and “o” symbols above the strings indicate whether that string should be played or not. The “x” means that you do not strum that string and an “o” means that you strum that string as an “open” string.
This might be confusing for some at first, especially if you’re not still sure about guitar string names, but you will get used to these diagrams and they will get easier to read fairly quickly.
For the E Major chord I will go through and explain how it is to be played. For the remaining guitar chords I will just show the diagram because the diagram will describe what you should be doing.
Easy Guitar Songs
The alternative to playing the A major is to swap around the 1st and 2nd fingers so that the 1st finger is on the G string on the 2nd fret and the 2nd finger is on the D string on the 2nd fret.
To get the best sound possible you want to get your fingers as close to the front edge of the fret as you can. Because you have 3 fingers all trying to fit into the 2nd fret for the A major chord some people find it easier to have the first finger on the G string to try to get it closer to the edge of the fret.
Note that you aren’t going to be able to get all 3 fingers right to the front of the fret whichever way you do it. Just try to get that 1st finger somewhere in the middle and not right to the back of the fret.
Guitar String Notes
For an alternative G major open chord you can bring in the 4th finger. Move the 3rd finger up to the B string 3rd fret and place the 4th finger on the high E string 3rd fret.
You need to bar both the B and high E strings with your first finger and you also need to make sure you miss both the Low E and A strings as you strum.
Although if you play the A string it won’t matter too much as there is an A note in the chord so it will still sound fine. However it won’t sound right if you play the Low E string.
Do All Guitars Have Six Strings?
How I like to play this chord is to mute the Low E string with my thumb (bringing it over the neck of the guitar) and to mute the A string with the tip of my third finger but this might be too difficult to start with – so you can start out just making sure you miss the Low E and A strings as you strum.

A major is an easy chord to start with, since the entire chord is located on the second fret, so you can free up your other fingers to mix it up. All you do is put your first finger on the fourth string, second finger on the third string, and third finger on the second string – all on the second fret.

The E major chord is unique in that it requires every string to play. Put your first finger on the first fret of the third string, then put your second finger on the second fret of the fifth string. The third finger goes on the second fret of the fourth string. Lastly, hold them all down and strum in a cohesive motion. Try to hit them all in one swoop!

The G major chord may be a little more challenging than some other chords, and it can be hard to quickly reach other chords after playing it. To play it, your first finger goes to the second fret of the fourth string, your second finger goes to the third fret of the fifth string, and finally, place your third finger on the third fret first string and strum them all carefully.

If you can play E major, A minor should be easy. Simply move your finger up one string. This chord is also very close to A major – just move the B note from the second fret to the first. Minor chords have a morose feeling to them, which makes them great for breakup songs. The A chord really is a staple for beginners to learn!
Moving on to barre chords is a big step when mastering the guitar, and the B minor chord is a good place to start. A barre chord involves placing your finger across several strings at once, as opposed to just using the tip of your finger to hold down a specific note.

To play it, put your pointer finger barred on the third fret from the first to fifth strings, while placing your second finger on the second string (B) on the fourth fret. Lastly, your third finger will need to go on the fourth string (D) and the fourth finger will go on the third string (G) – both on the fifth fret.
The D minor chord is almost exactly like its D major counterpart. However, you’ll need to move the high E from the second fret to the first fret. The fifth and sixth strings will need to be muted for the chord to sound correct. D minor sounds like you’re gearing up to deliver something impactful. It’s commonly used by musicians of all types, but it sounds especially at home in a good country or folk song.
If you’re looking for easy guitar chords, E minor is a good place to start. All you need to do is play an E major, except you remove the G string component.
