So this time around I’m including a number of the ones you said I left out of the last rundown - not all of those mind you as I’m looking to do 4 of these most likely. The first episode of these was more the classics obviously - and here we’re starting to move a little more left-field in places.

-

Significant to this selection are avant-garde designers Leonardo Lospennato and Ulrich Teuffel - both with 3 entries apiece. I will keep sprinkling in the more mainstay ones that you’re keen on - while these are very much my selections and I a the final arbiter in the process.

Modern Guitar Body Shapes That Break The Mold

I’ve managed to find approximate dates for the vast majority of these - while Leo Lospennato could really do with a timeline - as his guitars aren’t properly chronological referenced or documented - I would be happy to participate in that process and even do an article on the subject - if someone can furnish me with those details - Leo?

I’m increasingly looking towards innovative shapes - in terms of ergonomics, overall aesthetics as well as technical detailing and other practicalities. For sure not all will agree with this or these selections - while I feel we’ve covered a lot of ground with these first two overviews - and we’ll largely cover the vast majority of the obvious ones over the full series of 4 of these - 100 guitars in total!

I’ve had a lot of requests for Randy Rhoads V’s on the comments - while I don’t feel that shape is wholly far enough removed from the original Flying Vs - same goes for some of the ESP variants requested. I include the Fisher Saturn V here as I feel its shape is distinct - also because it reminds me of David Bowie’s Yamamoto-designed one-piece with the baggy legs!

Here follows the 2nd series roundup listing - ordered somewhat randomly - while it made sense at the time of compiling all of this!

The remit is slightly different here - where this curated selection is a mix of universally held iconic classic guitar body shapes, sprinkled with a few of my own idiosyncratic favourites. I don’t expect your own selection to be entirely the same - while surely there should be a 80-90% overlap or thereabouts.

The Differences Between Acoustic Guitar Body Shapes

This exercise has been done by many before - but typically more in silhouette fashion. While I wanted to include some iconic artist-related editions here - not always the most obvious, but each eminently worthy - you can hazard a guess first as to who those guitars are signature instruments for - before cheating and looking at the list below.

I wanted to have as broad a mix as possible and include some representatives of the Metal family of guitars - and I could not think of a better pointy-style SuperStrat candidate than Steve Vai’s Signature JEM Evo. Supposedly the second best selling ’Signature’ guitar of all time - after the Les Paul! The earliest guitar referenced here is from 1951 (Telecaster), while the most modern is the Ibanez ’X’ from 2021 - a span of 70  years!

I believe I’ve included all the obvious shapes here - do let me know which ones you would swap out - and for which models.

Custom Guitar Bodies

There may be some controversy over some shapes / preferred shapes - for instance you could argue that the PRS Santana is very similar to the Les Paul Junior Precursor - while there are some deft touches that Paul has made to improve on that templat as far as I’m concerned. I also felt that it was enough for Gibson to have 6 candidates here!

Click for more info. The shape and size of the body on an acoustic guitar has a critical impact on the instrument’s sonic sweet spot. We offer a wide assortment of shapes to ensure that we can offer you the guitar that does exactly what you need tonally.

Cort has designed multiple original body shapes over the years, including the popular NDX and SFX shapes, to help guitarists harness the particular sound and playing style that inspires them.

Cort has over 50 years of experience crafting millions of guitars. Not only has Cort evolved technically, but also in accumulating a very broad range of knowledge about woods, craftsmanship, music and the artists and players who play our guitars. We are committed to continue building on that experience and knowledge.

Electric Guitar Body Shapes

Our largest body shape, the Jumbo is loud and delivers a deep and rich low-end. The Jumbo body is very responsive to the touch and has exceptional sustain. Beyond its emphasized bass, the Jumbo exhibits an excellent dynamic range.

Considered the “standard” in acoustic guitar body shapes, dreadnought achieved its status based on performance. This shape delivers big volume with clarity, powerful low-end, rich midrange, and lush highs. The dreadnought remains popular today, especially for flatpicking
